Colder weather is officially upon us in the West coast (except California, where it's 52 degrees at night in the summer), and that means a couple of our favorite holidays are growing nearer with each passing day: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and National-Don't-let-Your-Skin-Take-a-Beating-From-the-Cold-Weather Day! If that last one sounded fake, that's because it is; however, the meaning behind this fanciful (and practical) holiday is no laughing matter. In the colder months, many of us experience an allover drying of not only our facial skin, but the skin of our hands, neck and feet. This dryness, conjured up as the body's natural response to the sudden weather change and due in part to the overall lack of humidity, can cause harder to reverse damage to the skin if a long term solution is not sought out. Don't worry We've got you covered with four facial masks that we use when the weather brings those yearly tidings of dull, chapped skin. Best of all, they are useful regardless of your skin type (though, we did put this together with dry skin types in mind):
These masks will help pack moisture back into your skin when the cold, dry weather pulls it out, but you should be diligent! Drink a lot more water and eat a large breakfast in the morning, depriving your body of nutrients first thing in the morning has a bad effect on the state of your skin as well as your figure. Also, don't expect the masks to work if you've applied them to dirty, un-cleansed skin! Wash your face and remove your makeup before using these facials; if you don't have makeup remover use olive oil, it's better for your skin anyway! Store any leftover facial in air tight containers and use throughout the week; the recommendation for facial masks is to apply them two-three times per week! Don't be afraid to experiment with these ingredients either, because they don't contain harmful chemicals that when mixed improperly, could damage your skin (though they do get messy depending upon the blend). Egg Yolk and Honey FacialAdmin A uses this mask frequently because of how effective it is! You need one egg yolk and two tablespoons of honey (if you can find Manuka honey that's the most effective, otherwise regular honey will work). beat this mixture until it's completely blended and apply directly to your clean face. Let it stand for ten minutes before rinsing and pat your face dry. The vitamin A in the egg yolk in addition to it's natural protein and fat content help distribute moisture to trouble areas in the skin without exacerbating existing skin conditions. As for the honey, it's a natural antibacterial that seals in moisture and can help seal open cuts. Warning! the mask is very sticky, and messy. If you want a slightly less messy mixture, add less honey, more egg yolk until you find a good balance. Also, you can use the egg whites as a pore tightening treatment!
Avocado FacialThis incredibly easy to make facial will pack much needed moisture into your skin, and even soften your skin! You need a fresh, ripe, peeled and pitted avocado; mash it until there's minimal lumpiness in the mixture and place on your face for about fifteen minutes. Rinse off and apply your favorite moisturizer. The avocado contains a lot of natural oils and vitamin E, which helps to penetrate moisture-zapped skin, also allowing it to absorb nutrients more easily. For variation on this recipe, you can add half a teaspoon of lemon juice to this mixture and chill it for half an hour to allow the mixture to co-mingle before use. You should have some avocado left over after making this mask since it only requires two tablespoons of avocado.
Pumpkin FacialOkay this facial is for those of us who want a facial that also brightens dull skin in the colder seasons. You'll need one fourth cups of cooked, peeled pumpkin, and two tablespoons of both plain yogurt and honey. blend together for about five to ten minutes and apply to moist skin. If you want a better result, sitting in a hot shower or steaming your face before using this masks is recommended. Wash off after fifteen minutes and apply moisturizers as needed. The pumpkin and yogurt have natural skin brightening complexes, vitamin A and C, and can soften skin dramatically after one application!
Mixed Olive Oil FacialThis mask is for people with extremely dry skin that is prone to frequent dry spells even in warmer weather. You'll need a fourth cup of olive oil (make sure that it's not mixed with another oil, like canola or soy) and one egg yolk. you'll need to beat the mixture with an electric blender until it's well blended. It may be extremely runny, so we recommend using a brush to apply it over an open sink. Rinse off after ten minutes and re-apply as needed throughout the week. The olive oil is full of vitamins and its fat content provides intense moisture for dry skin types.
