Sometimes, it can be hard to know exactly what treatments help take care of the skin around our eyes. Some of us do nothing at all to maintain it (be we don't have a need for that yet or some other reason). Some of us don't even know that there's a difference between the facial skin and that of the eye area (and there is indeed a difference). Today we're going to point out some very simple things that you can start up right now to get your eye area to a better state.
Healthy Sleep Habits.
If you're not getting a proper amount of sleep at night, your face will be one of the first indications of it. More specifically, your eye area may feel a bit drier than usual, and the damage can double if no counteractive regimen is instilled. Everyone should be getting at least eight hours of sleep at night, and take no more than a forty five minute nap during the day. This helps your body to undergo its natural repair process with less stress or interruptions. If you absolutely cannot get more sleep than you do now, consider a more well rounded diet full of leafy, green vegetables and consume more water throughout the day to help your body clear out impurities.
Diet Patterns.
This is not to say that you should be dieting; rather, you should be getting enough nutrition at meal time to keep you energized throughout the day and ward of any premature signs of aging. With the right amount of nutrition throughout the day, your body will synthesize vitamins, minerals, and fats more efficiently and maintain optimal function, a.k.a. your body will be able to clear our nasty things like waste with higher accuracy. Failure to maintain proper eating habits often results in skin that is dull or thin, susceptible to more infections, and can in some cases exacerbate photo-sensitivity in certain people.
Drinking Habits.
How much water have you had today? On average, a person will need to consume 64 oz. of water a day, so if you're not getting at least the average amount (though some people do not need much water to feel hydrated), or the amount required for your body in particular, you skin will show it and so will your body. People who drink less water throughout the day also tend to snack more often and while we're not here to play calorie counter, it really can add up if you're also experiencing poor sleeping habits or lack of sufficient dieting from the get go. Speaking of drinking, always know how alcohol consumption affects your body. It is an inhibitor that can contribute to skin problems such as breakouts and sudden, splotchy facial flushes with frequent exposure.
Makeup Routine.
Have a bad habit of leaving your makeup on while you're sleeping?? Your makeup may not be abrasive, but prolonged exposure to the dyes and fillers found in some cosmetics and wear down the skin on your eyes and cause, or accelerate the discoloration process, promote wrinkling of this skin due to clogged pores, and even prime you to get a stye. Take your makeup off no matter what and always use a non-alcoholic makeup remover that is exclusively for the eyes! If you don't have that, caminela, olive, or coconut oil can be used in substitution.
Skin Care Routine.
Wash, rinse, repeat: right? wrong. The form of your skin care routine can also effect your eye skin. Do you use a harsh facial scrub in you eye area? Most scrubs will state outright that this is not right, but anyone using a scrub (or any face product not specifically formulated for the eye skin) should know to avoid the eye area. This goes for facial masks and moisturizers too. Even a product with a gentle formula for our sensitive skin types could cause an adverse reaction for the skin around the eye.
But why are we making such a fuss about the under eye area, isn't it the same as the skin on the rest of our faces?
No, it's not. The skin of the eye area, like the skin of the lips and mouth, is much more sensitive, and prone to bruise or burn more quickly than the rest of the skin.. That's why it is important to have a separate regimen to care for the skin in this area:
