20121223 FOTD + NOTW!

|
It's going to be pretty exciting to get back into the swing of things with you guys! I got a little sick and took an early holiday on ya. But I'm back, and I've got some double posts for today! First let's talk about the rolling FOTD shots:
20121223FOTD: Xmas-y
I'm really a fan of red lips. As if it wasn't obvious from my posts lately! I really need to find another shade that I love so I've decided to dedicate a the rest of my money to buying a lip palette. I know BH does a good lip pallete but I want to buy my palette in person, you know? So far my search hasn't turned up and notable prospectives (besides BH), but I'm still looking!
FACE:
E.L.F. MAKEUP SETTING MIST
E.L.F. SHEER TINTED MOISTURIZER IN SPICE
MAYBELLINE FITME PRESSED POWDER IN COCONUT

LIPS:
BEAUTIQUE LIP LINER PENCIL IN WINE
C.O. BIGELOW ROSE SALVE
MILANI LIP FLASH LIP CRAYON IN HOT FLASH 05

EYES:
E.L.F. LENGTHENING AND DEFINING MASCARA IN BLACK

So I'm not really working with much here; thus my face appears pretty bare. I am really abstaining from the use of shadows until I can find a good red for my skin. The temptation to experiment has got me and I won't be using the fun colors until I get my hands on a good red! I do however, believe that I'm completely in season with all the red I have on~ happy holidays!

Now for the NOTW:
Black French tips over Matte Manicure
Black french tips, that's what this is called right? I don't know honestly, I just know that I love the look! There are variations of this manicure that I really like too! The top two are the black chevron tips and the gradient-tip nails with a hint-of-pink top coat to give a nice accent to the whole look!
Black French tips over Matte Manicure
There are some nice tutorials on how to get this look without doing what I did on pinterest as well as tumblr, so don't be afraid to try them: I personally like all of the ones that I've found (and tried) but if I'm strapped for time, the band method is the easiest route to go, plus it give the most clean cut finish, and it can be done on top of existing nail polish!

it's really hard to get this to look nice with acetone retouching, right?
Now that I'm newly inspired to continue the trend of contrast-y french tips, I'm going to change it up next week! I hope you'll be coming back for a read of the write up, because I really haven't been keeping up like I should; thank you as always for reading and have a happy holiday!

Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse Foundation in Caramel D2!

|
This is the oldest foundation I own; It's going in the trash after this review but, I wanted to do swatches ( a necessary evil) to provide an illustration of my frustration with color as the cosmetic industry has known it. I LOVE Maybelline Foundations, but I have my reservations about using them; it is completely based of the range of colors for me. It's a hit or miss every time so I don't loathe them for losing, but love them instead, for trying.
Caramel d2, swatch

Color.
This shade was definitely a cool tone.. It's not very flattering on me but then again it's not the right color so I couldn't have expected much more than what I got. I do like that it spreads and doesn't settle into pores or fine lines, but the color was a total miss for me. It's the closest to my skin tone before their darkest shade, cocoa:

wtf.
Well, I will say that I'm impressed by the coverage; if your complexion is muddy from dark spots or discolored, this foundation actually does a good job of correcting that and brightening your complexion up!
Scent.
Well this one has a bit of a perfume smell to it. like a synthetic, linen-y smell. I don't like to use anything on my skin that has too much fragrance to it but, this is not that bad.
Durability.
I may not like this foundation but it HAS staying power. When I used to frequently wear this foundation I wasn't using primers or bases yet, and I had a ten-hour day five out of seven days a week. I didn't really do touch ups and from what pictures tell me, I didn't need to. Five stars for durability.
Price.
Mine was a gift.. but it retails for 8.99USD. Had I bought this myself, I'd have been very disappointed, but since it was a gift I'm greatful (for the opportunity to review it exclusively).
Applicator.
Don't use your fingers at all. This makeup is thick and will stain your skin. If you use a brush wash it before using it again and wet your sponge before use with this foundation. Don't get in your water line!
Ingredients.
Water (Aqua), Isododecane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Glycerin, Cyclohexasiloxane, PEG 9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Butylene Glycol, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Disteardimonium Hectorite, PEG 10 Dimethicone, Cetyl PEG/PPG 10/1 Dimethicone, Sodium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, Polyglyceryl 4 Isostearate, Caprylyl Glycol, Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate, PEG 9, Aluminum Hydroxide, May Contain ( /-): CI 77891 (Titanium Dioxide), CI 77499, CI 77492, CI 77491 (Iron Oxides)
Packaging.
I was always very nervous that it'd break when I first got it; It's solid for a vial made of glass. I dropped it once; it didn't shatter but I'm not condoning in your trying this at home! It stains, like I've stated before so, keep the pump clean and don't forget to seal this stuff down with a setting spray that is very strong.

Overall.
I'm not as impressed as I ought to be. I like that it's actually very thick and has excellent coverage, but the colors offered leave a lot to be desired. I'm slapping this product with 2/5 stars. For those of you who love it or have cool tone skin this foundation may be a Godsend. For the rest of us, we may want to look elsewhere.

Caramel d2, blended; flash used
It didn't blend very well because it's too light for me. Oh well~

CE wearing Maybelline Dream Mouse Liquid Foundation; Flash Used
See the demarcation line between my scalp and face? That's not my tan line this time! this foundation no longer works for me so I'm afraid I'll be tossing it.

20121211 FOTD: Pinky Paradise!

|
Oh dear I seem to have gotten very busy in the past few days! Well busy has been a good thing for me because I now have even more stuff to shar with you all, but not before I post a very late (but still hot and ready) face of the day!

FACE:
E.L.F. MAKEUP SETTING MIST
E.L.F. TINTED MOISTURIZER IN SPICE/TONE 3
SEPHORA MATTIFYING POWDER IN D50

EYES:
E.L.F. 83 PIECE STUDIO EYESHADOW IN D1(BROW LINE), G2(EYELID CREASE), D5(CENTER OF EYELID), F3(ALL-OVER LID COLOR BASE)
L'OREAL H.I.P. IN BRAZEN (PINK SHADE ONLY, BOW OF EYELID, CENTERED AS ACCENT).
ARDELL FALSE LASHES IN DEMI-PIXIE.
E.L.F. LENGTHENING AND DEFINING MASCARA.

LIPS:
C.O. BIGELOW ROSE SALVE FOR LIPS, CHEEKS, AND OVERALL  SKINCARE.
NICKA K. COSMETICS VITAMIN E-INFUSED LIPSTICK IN NUDE BEACH.

Overall, I'm really pshyched with the appearance of the pink and the smooth look of my colors. I'm a blending novice so my looks tend to have more harsh lines out of habit, but I think that I did a good job this time around. I chose pink as my central color because a lot of other beauty bloggers were creating beautiful looks with pink and I wanted to give it a go too! I really loved Kimmy's pink shadow creation. Next I want to experiment with purples; I usually dislike the way they look against my skin tone but I want to get a second opinion on this; If you're in a chatty mood this Sunday, stop in for my next FOTD, okay?

20121206 NOTW + Product 411: Confetti Nail Lacquer!

|

Well now that there's on dress code for me to abide by, I've gotten back into the groove of my weekly manicure ritual. It's a bit sloppy, but everybody's going to start from a different point, right? I wanted to get gels, but I realized that would be a bad idea since I've nothing in my current cosmetic arsenal that could remove them once I get tired of them. Anyway, Let's talk shop:

NAIL COLOR:
MAYBELLINE EXPRESSWEAR NAIL LACQUER IN MAUVE
CONFETTI NAIL LACQUER IN HINT OF PINK
NEW YORK COLOR MATTIFYING TOP COAT

That's it, I didn't use base coat and I usually don't do so. It's a bad habit of mine, but I also don't have any right now so there are reasons (excuses) for my unrefined mannerisms. I only like the Orly base coat so I refuse to use anything else until I can get my hands on it (but that still won't stop me from painting my nails on a weekly basis). I think I've gotten better at removing my cuticles, but I'm very dehydrated so my hands look very dry here, sorry!

Now to talk about my product crush: Confetti. They nail lacquers are very thick, but durable. I usually don't use top coat with their lacquers because I don't find that there is a need for it, but they're also a bit difficult to take off. I use pure acetone nail varnish remover and it still takes some tough love to wear this stuff down. I like it as a cheap go-to in between getting my nails done or if I just want a clear coat for the week! Still, my all time favorite is Orly for my base and finishing coat needs, but confetti comes in at a close second! These varnishes can be found at CVS (whom I've heard is having a clearance sale right now; everywhere but Vegas apparently).

That's it for this weeks NOTW, stop in next week for some fierce Fall color!

20121202 Sunday FOTD!

|

It's finally time for that long awaited verdict on e.l.f. cosmetics! I bought a lot of things from them recently (they've had so many sales in the past two months that I couldn't resist), and I wanted to give a definitive recommendation about what's in and what could be better with the often buzzed-about cruelty free line.
FACE:
E.L.F SHEER TINTED MOISTURIZER IN TONE THREE.
SEPHORA MATTIFYING POWDER IN D50
E.L.F. MAKEUP SETTING MIST

LIPS:
E.L.F. LIP STAIN IN CRIMSON CRUSH
BEAUTIQUE LIP LINING PENCIL IN WINE
C.O. BIGELOW ROSE SALVE

EYES:
ARDELLE FALSE LASHES IN DEMI-PIXIE
E.L.F. LENGTHENING AND DEFINING MASCARA IN BLACK
E.L.F. LIQUID EYELINER IN BLACK
E.L.F. ESSENTIAL 83 PIECE STUDIO SET, SHADE B2 (PICTURED BELOW) USED ON INNER CORNER OF LOWER EYELIDS.

Looking back on this I now realize that my eyeliner was smudged on my left eye! I didn't rub or anything so I don't know what happened with that. But anyway, I'm really pleased with how a lot of the product performed! For the face items, I love my TM to death but I can only use it if my skin is having a dry spell (Winter coverage only ordeal) other than that it's too dewy for me. It looks good at first but after a few hours my skin will be bogged down with both moisture from the TM and my own oily-ness. As for the color, I'm pleased with it! I thought it'd be too light but it worked out just fine, and this product was just a dollar so I'll definitely think on buying it again in the future. Now here's to the bread winner: the makeup mist and set spray. I'm not into heavy setting sprays (I find that if they're too wet that they create wet, splotchy discoloration in my foundation; I work too hard for that to happen!) but this one is wonderful. It wastes a bit of the product with each spray but I think that can be regulated with half pumps. On top of makeup, it keeps your coverage smooth and long lasting, but underneath your makeup it can double as a primer! That's what I generally use it for when I want a smoother finish to my tinted moisturizer. It also helps to minimize the appearance of cakey-ness in powders! This spray is three dollars and can be found at K-mart or on eyeslipsface.com.
The lip stain pen is a product that I had some inhibitions about using. It was very dry when I opened it and the color doesn't spread at all. It's a felt-tipped pen with a cap insulation and while I'm madly in love with the design, the color performed poorly and the amount of product in the pen is a bit.. Alarming to say the least. Still, as you can see from the picture, the color is build-able (I'm wearing about five layers of stain here). One thing that you should know if you buy this lip stain is that the pen will make any dehydration problems you have very obvious, so use a lip conditioner or have a cup of hot tea before you put it on. All in all, it's a dollar, and cheaper than they alternatives offered by Revlon and Benefit: use at your own discretion.
As for my eye products, I've nothing but good things to say! I'm very impressed with the mascara. I has a short wand and the bristles are appropriately short and rounded. If you want to get the full length detail on each lash, then this is the mascara for you. It's even short enough for use on the lower lash line, so go for it! I use this mascara now even more than my full exposure by Smashbox! It's  good all around and just one dollar. The wand in the eyeliner has changed to a thinner brush, and that allowed me to regulate how much product it picked up from the pot. I'm really glad that was changed, it was something that I'd pointed out in my review of the eyeliners that can make using them a bit of a hassle, but not anymore! Later I think I'll get into the other colors, but I'm pleased with my black liner for now. Still love my studio eyeshadow kit. I'm using mostly neutral colors now because I want to try something different: I usually use a lot of color and liner to create my looks, and avoid neutral/nude/brown hues, so this Fall I'm taking the dive! What I really want now is a good, played down smokey eye look made with neutral hues (but I'm still praying on the whole red shadow thing..)
Overall, I'm going to give E.L.F. cosmetics a big thumbs up! I'm partial to their mineral and studio items, but, they've really got something good going on. With all the sales they've been having recently, it's really easy to get into their collections without spending a lot of money. I will be reviewing the products listed here in full detail through December, but please remember that experience is the best review that you can benefit from!
